Writing Voice: A Day in the Life Sunday

I have been thinking a lot about voice lately. If you've been writing for a while, or even if you are new to the craft, I encourage you to do the same.

I have been blogging for over 6 years and am now accepting that I hit a plateau a little while back. I thought about stepping away from the blog but I could not do it. My writing slowed down and I did not pursue opportunities to speak on the topics I was known for writing about. If I didn't enjoy writing about them, how engaging and impactful would I be speaking about them?

Moving forward, I am committed to not write about what I always wrote about because it is easy or what others expect to read. I am working on getting back in touch with what keeps me going. That's what I'll write about and that's where voice comes in. The whole reason for this post is I wanted to share the most perfect definition of voice I've heard in a long time:

Voice is "the intersection of passion and what resonates with others."

Have you found your voice?

Haiku: A Day in the Life Sunday

Good Morning! I had a burst of inspiration and decided to switch my mind from the business-y end of the spectrum to the creative-y end of the spectrum and see what I could do with a different style of writing.

Ok, I lied. I didn't think of this on my own. I am committed to developing my skills as a writer and am in the midst of a writing course. One of our assignments, which BTW I am going to complete all of (no matter what it takes), is writing in a different genre.

For this assignment, I chose haiku simply because I am limited to 17 syllables overall and really, how much damage coud I do in 17 syllables?!

I also chose haiku because every word counts and I tend to write longer-ish thoughts. I can shorten them down and add a little punch to my message - what do you think?

Anyway, no need to delay this any longer so here is my first shot at capturing what I feel when I watch my daughter sleep:

In peaceful slumber
her dreams carry her forward
and further from me.

When I am not HR-ing or sleeping myself:

Moleskine coffee peace
ideas captured so freely
writer at her best

Hey, it's a start! What are you up to this weekend? What are you creating?
